“Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain”
-Psalm 127:1
A Historical Snapshot
1886-2019
Sam Allen and his wife deeded the plot to Lewis Woods and Samuel McMullen. These men trustees of the Colored School of Hightowel District in Caswell County in 1873. Allens Chapel grew out of the school – which was located near the H.S Thaxton property on Milton and Hillsborough Roads between Leasburg and Prospect Hill. The church was organized in 1886.
Building the House…
The first church was a log building erected that year. The second church was a frame building, erected in 1903; still another building built in 1905. The remodeling of our current church was done in early 1950’s when a belfry and steeple were added. Rev Spencer Woods, pastor, was given the contract to build. A cornerstone-laying ceremony was held July 4, 1948 by the Allens Masonic Lodge #676.
The church was heated by wood until the late 1950’s when an oil furnace was installed. Kerosene lamps were used until 1949 when electricity was connected. In 1967, the present brick structure was built under the leadership of Rev. George H. Brooks. Encompassing two floors, the main floor housed the pastor’s study, choir room and secretary’s office. The Kitchen, fellowship hall and ladies lounge was in the basement. A cornerstone-laying ceremony was held in July 4, 1967.
In 1983, under the guidance of Rev. James W. Brown, Allens Chapel was again remodeled again. Pastor Brown served as the general contractor on this project. The fellowship hall, kitchen, pastor’s study, choir room and baptismal were now on the first floor.
Take Me to the Water…
Prior to the outdoor baptismal pool being erected in 1963, members were baptized in Rudd’s pond, a watering hole on Thaxton’s farm off SR 1702, in Hyco Creek on Grier Church Road and in Houston Branch on SR 1702.
